Following the blowout between Washington and Kyiv, the stakes are “maybe the highest that we’ve seen since 1945”, said Scott Lucas, Professor of American Studies & International Politics at the Clinton Institute, University College Dublin. “For the first time in 84 years, since 1941, the US government has not aligned with Europe”, Lucas said, adding that “Europe has not choice here: Europe either stands together, or it stands apart” to face threats from Russia or even the US.
