Israeli and Russian wars, looming Trump reign set to dominate G20 summit

G20 leaders gather in Brazil on Monday for a G20 summit set to be dominated by differences over Israel’s wars in Gaza and Lebanon, and Russia’s war in Ukraine, and implications of Donald Trump’s White House return.

The summit venue is in Rio de Janeiro, which will have a massive police deployment designed to keep the public well away from the meeting site.

Brazil’s leftwing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will be using the opportunity to highlight his position as a leader championing Global South issues while also being courted by the West.

The conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine are set to dominate the summit. “We are negotiating with all the countries on the final declaration’s passages about geopolitics… so that we can reach consensual language on those two issues,” Brazil’s chief diplomatic official for the G20, Mauricio Lyrio, said.

Israeli strike hits southern Beirut’s Ghobeiry neighbourhood

A strike hit Beirut’s southern suburbs shortly after the Israeli military put out a call for people in the area to evacuate.

The evacuation order posted on X by Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee warned residents “near facilities and interests affiliated with Hezbollah” to move out, warning of imminent strikes in the Ghobeiry area.

Canada warns of ‘catastrophic’ humanitarian conditions in Gaza

Canada’s foreign minister on Thursday expressed deep concern about “catastrophic” humanitarian

conditions across Gaza and warned about “the life-threatening levels of acute malnutrition”.

Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly cited a Nov. 8 report by the Famine Review Committee that found a strong likelihood that famine is occurring or imminent in areas within the northern Gaza Strip. The committee has previously found that 133,000 people in Gaza were facing catastrophic food insecurity.

“This means that civilians – men, women and children – are dying because of the lack of humanitarian assistance allowed into Gaza,” she said in a joint statement with International Development Minister Ahmend Hussen.

  • Lebanon said at least 12 people were killed Thursday in an Israeli strike targeting the main civil defence facility in the eastern Baalbek area, with the rescuers counting eight members among the dead.
  • The Israeli anthem was booed and whistled by the Stade de France crowd before Les Bleus‘ Nations League game against Israel on Thursday.
  • The United States said Thursday it disagreed both with a UN committee’s finding that Israeli warfare methods were consistent with “genocide” and a Human Rights Watch allegation of “crimes against humanity” in Gaza.
