The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo launched attacks on government sites across Sudan in April 2023, igniting a conflict with the Sudanese army under the command of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

The war-torn country has since been engulfed in yet another civil war.

The fighting has sparked a major humanitarian crisis, displacing 12 million people and killing tens of thousands.

From Port Sudan on the northeast coast to the capital Khartoum, FRANCE 24’s Bastien Renouil and Mohamed Farhat met civilians who have been living through the conflict.

Port Sudan: the new administrative centre

Port Sudan has become the de facto capital of the country as government ministries, institutions and international NGOs have relocated from Khartoum to the port city on the Red Sea.

Since the start of the conflict, hundreds of thousands of Sudanese have taken refuge in the city, sending rent prices soaring.

Atbara: the home of the revolution

Multicultural and cosmopolitan Atbara, in northeast Sudan, is where the revolution began that toppled dictator Omar al-Bashir in 2019. During the civil war more than a million refugees have fled to Atbara, mostly from the capital Khartoum, 300 kilometres away.

But the city could soon be a lot smaller. As the army advances towards Khartoum, the government is starting to return displaced people to their homes.

Omdurman: treating malnourished children

In Omdurman, across from Khartoum on the opposite side of the Nile River, life is returning to normal. Shops and restaurants are open – but many children still suffer from malnutrition. In Albuluk hospital, medics are treating families fleeing from areas controlled by the rebel RSF.

Bahri: a community kitchen for the displaced

The final report in our series takes us north of the capital to Bahri, a town hard-hit by the fighting, where a charity funded by the Sudanese diaspora runs a community kitchen that serves hot meals to families displaced by war.
