Lebanon’s capital Beirut was targeted in a massive Israeli attack early on Saturday morning, with five missiles raining down on an eight-story residential building in the heart of the city, leading to several fatalities. Local media reported that the building had been completely destroyed and that Beirut had woken up to a “horrific massacre”. Follow our liveblog for the latest developments in the Middle East.
Gaza civil defence says 19 killed in Israeli strikes
Gaza’s civil defence agency said that 19 people, some of them children, were killed in Israeli air strikes and tank fire on Saturday.
Agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that “19 people were killed and more than 40 others wounded in three massacres caused by Israeli air strikes in the Gaza Strip between midnight and this morning”, as well as by tank fire in Rafah in the territory’s south.
Overnight Israeli air raids on southern Beirut suburb
At least three new night-time strikes targeted the southern outskirts of the Lebanese capital Beirut late Friday into early Saturday, images from AFP and state media showed.
“Enemy military planes have targeted the southern suburb of Beirut by carrying out a strike near Ghobeiry,” said national news agency Ani.
The first of the strikes landed just before midnight local time.
Columns of smoke could be seen rising in at least two separate places over the district, broadcast images showed. The area has been regularly bombed by Israel.

Several people killed and many injured in central Beirut attack
At least four people have been confirmed killed, and over a dozen more have been wounded in the Israeli attack that demolished an eight-story building in Beirut’s central Basta neighbourhood, Hezbollah’s al-Manar broadcaster reported, citing the health ministry.
Footage broadcast by Lebanon’s Al Jadeed station showed at least one destroyed building and several others badly damaged around it.
Early on Saturday morning, rescue workers were searching the site for survivors.

“Beirut, the capital, woke up to a horrific massacre, as the Israeli enemy’s air force completely destroyed an eight-storey residential building with five missiles on Al-Mamoun Street in the Basta area,” the National News Agency reported.
