This year, headlines have been dominated by wars in Ukraine, Sudan and the Middle East. Israel’s leader has become a wanted man for alleged war crimes, and revolution in Syria has led to the downfall of a dictator, though the true scale of Assad’s reign of terror is still coming to light.

It has been a record year for elections around the world, more than half of the planet’s population voted in more than 60 countries, with populism, polarisation, immigration and identity politics recurring themes. A tough year for incumbents with compromises in India and South Africa, complete change in the UK, Sénégal, Ghana, Portugal and Lithuania.

While here in Paris in an Olympic year, a baton-passing of prime ministers worthy of the relay team itself, four of them too.

And it has been a year where Americans made Donald Trump President again, and Time Magazine made him Person of the Year, again, in a year that has seen him convicted as a felon, survive an assassination attempt or two, and defeat two Democratic Candidates in the race to the White House, one who did not know when to stop, and the other who never seemed to get started.
