Thousands of people gathered in Goma to hear from the leader of the M23 rebels, the group behind the conflict in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Corneille Nangaa called a minute’s silence for victims of his fighters’ takeover of the city, before warning of more unrest and vowing to drive out the government.

Also in the programme, climate experts from across West Africa meet in Sierra Leone to tackle the growing impact of extreme heat in the region’s cities. Rising urban temperatures – driven by deforestation, urban expansion and climate change – are already having an impact on people.

And as global demand for lithium is surging, so is the number of Nigerian mines for the critical mineral. Many of the miners heading undergorund in the hopes of making their fortune do so without the proper permits. But for them the promise of reward is worth the risk.
