In tonight’s edition, regional tensions continue to rise as M23 rebels continue their advance through eastern DR Congo. Thousands have been killed since the Rwandan-backed rebels stepped up their offensive by capturing Goma in North Kivu. Kinshasa has called for another emergency meeting of the Southern and East African regional blocs over the crisis.

Africans also aren’t optimistic about the difference their leaders are making. The pan-African research network Afro Barometer has analysed data on governance collected by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation to find out why perceptions of how the continent is doing are often at odds with what’s actually happening. 

Finally, Ivory Coast remains a leading producer of cotton, even after the devastation caused by the jassid only three years ago. The recovery from the damage caused by the voracious pest has been impressive, but remains fragile.
