Guinea has announced  three days of national mourning starting tuesday. On monday, many in the country felt shock, confusion, sadness and anger after the deaths the evening before of at least 56 people in a stampeded at a football match. The crush happened in the town of Nzérékoré during the final of a tournament played on sunday night. Many spectators are still in hospital and here are fears the death toll could rise.

Also, South Africa has taken over the G20 presidency from Brazil, preceding next year’s edition which will be hosted by the US. President Cyril Ramaphosa has pledged to fight for the interests of the African continent and the Global South, but faces the challenge of dealing with a US administration that could oppose some forms of multilateralism, and that has shown hostility towards BRICS members this week.

Finally, the UN Agency responsible for communication technology to help countries development has found that Africa has fallen behind in the global internet rush. Around the world, 5.5billion people are believed to be online in 2024, 227 million more than last year. Thats 68% of the worlds people, but the digital reality across Africa, though hugely varied between countries, overall has some huge holes with an average figures being just 38 %.
