Forty years ago some of the world biggest music stars joined together under the name Band Aid to record a fundraiser single for Africa. The song, Do They Know It’s Christmas, was a global smash and still a holiday perennial. But its rerelease on the fortieth anniversary has put a spotlight on the damaging story it told about Africa. We look at how voices on the continent are now pushing back against the narrative of helplessness.

Also in this edition, drums, horns and flags at the ready as Ghana campaign season wrapped up ahead of the presidential election. Twelve candidates are vying for the top job, including a current VP and a former president.

And 112 media outlets are greenlit to operate in Senegal. Officials say they’re cleaning up the sector. Critics say it’s a sign freedoms are in decline.
