This Friday marks one month since the start of the wildfires that ravaged the US city of Los Angeles, leaving neighbourhoods in a state of utter devastation. Fires are nothing new in California, but the ones that tore through Los Angeles last month are raising serious concerns about how the disaster was handled.

Residents in some of the areas of Los Angeles hardest hit by the wildfires say they never received evacuation alerts. Meanwhile, firefighters say they struggled with dry hydrants. Moreover, a key water reservoir that could have helped was empty, with residents not being told.

As the city assesses the damage, many residents are left wondering: could more have been done to prevent this disaster? And who, if anyone, will be held accountable?

FRANCE 24’s Wassim Cornet and Pierrick Leurent met some of those affected by the fires in a bid to find answers.
