MPs get $21,000 a month, soldiers $100. A new anti-corruption report says the Congolese government’s overspending is allowing the elite to benefit while other vital areas suffer from underfunding; not least the underpaid troops facing a rebel takeover in the east. 

Also, in Togo, campaigners working with some of the thousands of women who feel forced to go underground for abortions warn that the restrictive conditions under which they’re currently allowed could cost lives.   

Finally,  the fall armyworm has devastated thousands of hectares of maize in Benin, the country’s main food crop, and farmers are trying to stem the pest’s damage. Farmers are turning to technology to try and control the pest.
