In an interview with FRANCE 24, US surgeon Mark Perlmutter claimed that Israeli snipers are deliberately targeting children in Gaza. Perlmutter said that while he was volunteering at the European hospital of Khan Younis in southern Gaza earlier this year, he “saw two children that were shot twice”. He added: “No child gets shot twice by mistake.”

FRANCE 24 spoke to Mark Perlmutter, an American hand surgeon who volunteered at the European hospital of Khan Younis, in southern Gaza, from late March through the first half of April 2024. The injured patients he saw were “civilians”, Perlmutter said, adding that he did not see “one military combatant”, either walking around alive or as a patient.

The doctor went on to claim that Israeli snipers are deliberately shooting children in Gaza, citing his observation of two children who were shot twice. “No child gets shot twice by mistake,” he said.

“Metadata proves it was real,” Perlmutter added, referencing a recent article published by The New York Times detailing the harrowing experiences of doctors in Gaza such as himself.

‘We are complicit in this’

Despite repeatedly calling for a ceasefire, the US has continued its military assistance to Israel since the start of the war in Gaza, which began following the Hamas-led attacks on Israel of October 7, 2023.

“The Western world is paying for the bombs that are burning children to death,” Perlmutter said. “They’re paying for the bullets that shredded those children. We are complicit in this.” He called the situation in Gaza a “genocide”.

In mid-October, the United States threatened to curb its military assistance to Israel if it doesn’t produce a “dramatic increase” in humanitarian aid coming into the Gaza Strip, asking for action within 30 days.
